The application process for graduate school will be similar to the
one you went through for entering college. Check each grad school’s
website or catalogue for specifics and for deadlines. In general,
you will need to submit:
- An application
- A personal essay
- A non-refundable fee
- A financial aid application
- Official college transcripts
- Test scores (usually sent directly from the testing service.)
- Letters of recommendation
Since graduate programs provide more specific and in-depth education than undergraduate programs, admissions staff will want to know why you are interested in their program. Try to give specific information about your career goals, areas of particular interest, and why/how this program meets your needs. Provide examples, where possible, of experience or activities to demonstrate your areas of interest. Show, in the essay, that you have thoroughly researched the program and understand what it has to offer. Make sure your essay is concise, thorough, accurate, organized, and enthusiastic. Admissions committees look for (among other things) writing ability, goals, level of academic knowledge in the subject area, and maturity.
Be sure to allow enough time to obtain/submit each application item.
Check and double-check your grammar and spelling.
Keep a copy of everything you submit!
