How to start the Pine e-mail program

  1. Use SSH or Telnet software to open the host acs.bu.edu. If you are not sure that you have this type of software on your computer, or if you have never used it, see the page at www.bu.edu/tech/help/acs/software.
  2. Once you have launched SSH or Telnet to acs.bu.edu, log in as prompted with your BU login name and Kerberos password.
  3. After logging in, you may be asked to give the terminal type, in which case you should enter vt100 and press Enter to proceed.
  4. Next you may be asked whether or not you want to read system news. You can press y, n or q as appropriate.
  5. Then at the %, type pine and press Enter.

If you have never used e-mail on the UNIX system, you will find that Pine is an easy-to-use, menu-driven program. Most likely you will pick up the basics without any instruction, but there is some on-line documentation in case you need it. Note that, although Pine is a text-based e-mail client, you can save attachments to your ACS account.
